PORT VILA, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- Vanuatu Prime Minister Edward Natapei visited two Chinese Navy ships, the training vessel, Zhenghe, and the frigate, Mianyang, here on Saturday.

The two ships, with hundreds of sailors on board, arrived in Vanuatu's capital Thursday for a four-day goodwill visit at Natapei's invitation to mark the 30th anniversary of Vanuatu's independence.

The prime minister was welcomed at the port by Chinese Navy Rear Admiral Leng Zhenqing and Chinese Ambassador to Vanuatu Cheng Shuping.

Natapei said the visit, the first by the Chinese Navy to Vanuatu, boosted communication between the two country's defence forces and played an important role in enhancing friendship between the two countries.

Leng, also the commander of the visiting formation, outlined their mission and expressed his gratitude to the prime minister for the convenience that the Vanuatu government and people had provided during their visit.

Vanuatu is the second stop on the Chinese ships' itinerary, which has brought them to Papua New Guinea and will take them to Tonga, New Zealand and Australia.
